Day 294 Oct 20, 2019 INTIMACY – Raymond Carver Where I’m Calling From – Selected Stories 1989 General – 9 Pages This is a fun little study of the title topic, but after the relationship is over and all that’s left is guilt and anger. It’s fun enough, but there isn’t much to it. Should’ve maybe opened the book with these lesser Carver stories. That said, the dialogue is, as always with Carver, so human it’s a surprise he’d not just tapped into other people’s memories and wrote exactly what was said. *** Day 295 Oct 21, 2019 L’APPEL DU VIDE by M.P. Giddings Stories We Tell After Midnight – 2019 Horror – 5 Pages (about, digital) I have a theory. I read a ton of indie horror, much of it unpublis

Day 288 Oct 13, 2019 WHISPERS IN THE EAR OF A DREAMING APE by Joshua Chaplinsky Whispers in the Ear of a Dreaming Ape – 2019 (story originally published in Pantheon, 2017) General – 12 Pages (about, digital) As with most other Chaplinsky stories I’ve read, this one relies on a jolting change in direction, like the punchline to a joke. Makes sense, as many of his stories are comedic. This one isn’t, it’s mostly serious with a side order of weird people. It’s quick, engaging, and well-written. That said, big hooks really nail me when the characters are realistic or at least have relatable qualities, and in the dance between having weirdly entertaining characters and boring people to death with

Day 281 Oct 6, 2019 UNION DUES by Gary Braunbeck Borderlands 4 – 1994 Horror – 26 Pages This one’s good and creepy, and fantastically layered. Labor as a destiny, man built to feed the machines, man accepting this to feed his family. This is the kind of story that might someday get lost to time as household paradigms have shifted and slaving to capitalism, trading life and happiness for a little piece of the atomic pie, has fallen out of popularity and even possibility. Great writing. Good layers. The ending was a little too subtle thanks to the visuals and buildup, and I guess the message. Still, quite good. **** Day 282 Oct 7, 2019 TWICE AMPUTATET FOOT by Joshua Chaplinsky Whispers in the

Day 274 Sep 28, 2019 MOWING FOR THE CHICKEN by Eric Rickstad Cemetery Dance Issue #77 – 2019 Horror – 3 Pages This one’s a mighty straightforward and the path to the end, though littered with reasons to root for the main character, it has zero sideways steps or glimpses at red herrings. It’s a simple comeuppance story. Had pretty good texture and a fun voice, and it didn’t take long to breeze through. *** Day 275 Sep 30, 2019 SOLVE FOR X by Stephen Graham Jones After the People Lights Have Gone Off – 2014 (story originally published in Mixer, 2013) Horror – 16 Pages This is a pretty brutal story. It has strange external violence and delves into the internal impact of such violence, and insan
